Window Treatments

Window collisions are among the top 2 reasons that birds are admitted to our facility

Birds share our urban environment and collide with windows on a daily basis. It is theorized that many birds that strike windows and are “stunned,” fly away afterwards and die within 48 hours. Kornreich, et al. reports that “60% of patients died in care, either by succumbing to their injuries or by euthanasia.“

The best way to save birds from window collisions is prevention

#1 Acopian Curtains

Acopian curtains are cords or wires strategically placed on the exterior of your home, over your windows. FCS professor, Barbara Brown has studied effective methods to mitigate and has identified Acopian curtains as a highly effective solution. See more about her studies here.

A free cord hanging device has been designed and is available to download here for 3D printing.

Decal or Sticker Treatments

Collision deterrent decals or stickers such as Feather Friendly or WingSafe help to prevent window collisions by making the window more visible to birds and by breaking up reflections.

Traditional Shutters or External Coverings

Any solid external coverings will help to reduce window collisions. Close these when windows are not in use for full prevention. Use these with other mitigation techniques for the highest effectiveness, as, when open, they do not provide effectiveness.

External Window Screens

Just like external window coverings, such as shutters or shades, external window screens can prevent avian window collisions.

External screens may break up the reflection of skies and trees and provides a visual barrier. They may potentially act as a cushion for birds that may collide with them, although this point has not been studied.

Small mesh under a half inch is best to reduce collisions.
