Volunteer with Wildlife Center of Salt Lake

WCSL is not taking additional volunteers at this time! Please check back in Fall 2024 for new opportunities. Thank you! If you have questions, please reach out to us at info@wildsaltlake.org. See below for a list of volunteer types and descriptions.

On-Site Volunteer (Support)

On-site support volunteers perform diet preparation for wild animals at the center. This may include but is not limited to washing and chopping fruits, vegetables, and greens; performing grocery selection and pick-up; preparing whole-prey, invertebrate, and meat items; and taking care of the invertebrate colonies (live feeder insects). Support volunteers also perform general cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning empty animal enclosures, dishes, laundry, and garbage duties. We are a TEAM first and foremost so if something on this list sounds unappealing, we are flexible with exact duties.

On-Site Volunteer (Husbandry)

Work directly and hands-on with the animals at the center by becoming a husbandry volunteer. After training and evaluation, these volunteers will work through cleaning, feeding, handling, and medical care of our wildlife patients to get them healed up and released back into the wild.

Program Volunteer (Urban Foraging and Gardening for Wildlife)

Make a big impact in the lives of recovering wild animals through our Urban Foraging and Gardening for Wildlife Program.  This program collaborates with gardeners and urban foragers to utilize excess cultivated and foraged food items to bring high-quality nutrition to our wild patients while promoting our dedication to sustainability. Program Volunteer (Release)

After a successful rehabilitation process, some animals are already experienced and are ready to go after their wounds have healed.  Others, however, require a slower acclimation either back to the area from where they came, or in the case of a juvenile animal - they are literally learning how to survive. As a release volunteer, you will be working closely with the staff to plan both hard and soft releases. Hard releases sometimes require hiking into remote areas and soft releases may require a yard with lots of cover and trees, free from cats and other potential predators.

Administrative Volunteer

If sweating and animal poop is not for you, but you still want to contribute to the overall cause, we have several administrative duties that need to be filled on a daily and weekly basis. Administrative Volunteers contribute in a less physical capacity which may include both remote work, as well as on-site phone call triage, intake paperwork and records. These can be done on-site or remotely, simply fill out the volunteer application to see what is available.

Committee Volunteer

Committee volunteering is for dedicated individuals who have a strong desire to make a lasting impact in this space. An ideal committee volunteer will have experience in the area of the committee they are serving under and will make recommendations to the Board of Directors for new programs to further our mission of “Conserving Utah native species through science, education, and rehabilitation.” For more information on available committees, you can either email us via our contact form, or by sending a message to info@wildsaltlake.org or by filling out the volunteer application below.
